A Musical Tribute to the People and Industry That Put the World on Wheels
August 21–23 at Meadow Brook Theatre
WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. — Created by Janet Torreano Pound. Before CAR STARS, Janet was the Michigan casting director for thirty films including; Grand Torino, Batman v Superman, Red Dawn and No Sudden Move. She wrote Car Stars as a musical tribute to Michigan’s automotive heritage featuring 23 original songs. Fred, an 80-year-old retired factory worker is the ‘Phantom of the Factory’ and will be performed by Lou Beatty Jr. Beatty who played Walter on A Million Little Things and various characters in Betty White’s Off Their Rockers. Fred drives the bus through factory grit and auto show glitz. The show blends history, humor, romance, and music into one entertaining road trip.
CAR STARS celebrates the people and industry that did more for creating a strong middle class, improving wages and working conditions, and helped win World War I1 than any other city in the world.
The journey begins with a high-energy vaudeville number where hubcaps replace straw hats and ends with a rousing gospel finale, “Gotta Move Forward.” In between, audiences meet a colorful cast of auto show personalities whose humor, romance, and heart bring the showroom floor to life. Celebrating the diverse cultures that helped build the industry, CAR STARS is as entertaining as it is inspiring.
“People ask me if you need to be a car buff to enjoy this show,” Janet’s answer, “You don’t need to know a cupholder from a carburetor—or even have a driver’s license—to enjoy this ride.”
