Automotive Foundations for Youth

This summer, teens can learn about automotive engineering in the very place that launched Detroit’s reputation as the Motor City. The Ford Piquette Plant Museum, the birthplace of the Model T, in collaboration with Meknology, Inc., will offer a weekend workshop introducing students to automotive engineering through a historical and hands-on lens. “Automotive Foundations” takes place on August 22-23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. This program is for youth ages 14 to 21 with an interest in developing mechanical knowledge and skills. The cost is $100, but scholarships are available based on need.

Students will look under the hoods of the early Ford engines powered by gasoline, as well as explore the electric vehicles of the early 1900s. Youth will learn how modern internal combustion and electric systems evolved with an emphasis on innovation, historical impact and sustainability. Through interactive lessons and guided builds, participants will assemble a basic gasoline engine and a simple electric motor. These workshops conclude with Model T driving demonstrations and rides!

Enrollment for this one-of-a-kind automotive experience is limited and first-come, first serve. Students must be present for a full weekend session, Saturday and Sunday.
